Learn About the Program
The Camp MakeBelieve Kids 8-Step Program addresses all aspects of Social and Emotional Learning, focusing on key social and emotional competencies--emotion identification and management, motivation, empathy, and peer relationships.
Thirty-two separate lesson plans, with enough supplemental materials for an additional forty to sixty lessons are beautifully laid out and organized in an easy to follow Guidebook, and aligned with eight individual workbooks.
The Guidebook’s eight steps are laid out in a sequence that build one on another as children learn the importance of:
· forming and maintaining peer connections;
· identifying and appropriately expressing feelings;
· understanding physical, emotional, and physical boundaries;
· empathizing with others;
· managing their own intense feelings and moods;
· recognizing and defending against manipulative behaviors such as bullying;
· recognizing and modifying their own thoughts, feelings and behavior according to a given situation, and
· ultimately becoming aware of their positive qualities and being comfortable asserting themselves appropriately in new, frustrating or challenging situations.
The eight workbooks contain stories and drawings that correlate to each step making the issues come alive in an engaging way. As children read and discuss the stories, they relate to the situation and protagonists, often asking “Is this about me?” Read-along CDs of each story provide a wonderful alternative for those children whose learning style is more auditory than visual. Exercises, songs, and guided imagery help kids practice what they have learned, while memoranda to parents help to keep the momentum going at home.
