Learn About the Program

The Camp MakeBelieve Kids 8-Step Program addresses all aspects of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), focusing on key social and emotional competencies--emotion identification and management, motivation, empathy, and peer relationships.

Thirty-two separate lessons are aligned with eight individual workbooks to provide a child with all the tools necessary to learn to:

  • form and maintain peer connections
  • identify and appropriately express feelings
  • understand physical, emotional, and physical boundaries
  • empathize with others
  • manage their own intense feelings and moods
  • recognize and defend against manipulative behaviors such as bullying
  • recognize and modify their own thoughts, feelings and behavior according to a given situation,
  • and ultimately become aware of their positive qualities and become comfortable asserting themselves appropriately in new, frustrating or challenging situations.

The eight workbooks contain stories and drawings that correlate to each step making the issues come alive in an engaging way. As children read and discuss the stories, they relate to the situation and protagonists, often asking “Is this about me?” Read-along CDs of each story provide a wonderful alternative for those children whose learning style is more auditory than visual. Exercises, songs, and guided imagery help kids practice what they have learned, while memoranda to parents help to keep the momentum going at home.

 Testimony

"Darian has made a lot of progress. He was having trouble every day at school. Now we had this past year with hardly any problems. Darian still has an aide on the playground to assist him with social settings and to assist with harder tasks in the classroom. We have lots of problems with social interactions with other kids. Doesn't understand when kids might be just playing. He blames others. He wants friends but has trouble making them and keeping."
