ADHD and Camp MakeBelieve Kids

Childhood behavioral problems and emotional unawareness is a concerning topic, highly relevant to early juvenile delinquencies.  Modern research shows a strong link between social and emotional competence and an individual’s ability to be a productive member of society.  The U.S. Department of Justice reports that children with ADHD may appear functionally impaired in many areas--engaging in negative behaviors that frustrate and disrupt family, school, and peer relationships.  ADHD, left untreated, puts the child and adolescent at a greater risk than the “typical” population for becoming engaged in antisocial behavior, school failure and becoming a victim to physical harm.

The Collaborative Association for Social and Emotional Learning provides extensive research that demonstrates Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs are highly effective in preventing high-risk behaviors.

"In a recently completed meta-analysis of close to 700 evaluation studies of SEL programs for children preschool to high school, SEL participating schools saw a 44% decrease in suspensions and a 27% decrease in other disciplinary actions.  SEL programming reduces high-risk behaviors both by enhancing student attachment to school and by giving children foundational skills to make healthy and ethical choices, resist negative social influences and manage their feeling in productive ways."

Camp MakeBelieve Kids - Where SEL and ADHD Meet

Child therapist, Pamela Goldberg, has created a unique after school program that provides the social and emotional learning tools to assist in a smooth journey through childhood, adolescence and beyond.

Goldberg’s Camp MakeBelieve Kids program incorporates a multitude of unique inter-locking educational tools that help children learn life lessons while using their imaginations and having fun. The original characters, stories, workbooks, musical play, songs, guided imagery, games, posters, strategies and hands-on activities are all geared at building emotionally competent kids.  The Camp MakeBelieve Kids mission is to help children learn how to safely and effectively manage their feelings and become masters of self-control.  The program is structured to develop children with high self-confidence and self-esteem that are empowered to succeed in class, at home and in life.  A unique aspect of this program is the lack of diagnostic, clinical labels.  The issues that children with ADHD have are also problems that all children encounter – but in different degrees. Not surprising, about half of the children who attend CMB Kids have a diagnosis of ADHD.

Referrals to CMB Kids come from teachers, parents, school counselors and other health care professionals who are seeking help for children encountering difficulties following the rules, relating to peers, misunderstanding social cues and clues and difficulty regulating feelings. CMB Kids encourage parental involvement through the use of specially designed memos that facilitate discussions about content and promotes reinforcement of strategies at home and school.

 Testimony

"The study really shines a light on something many parents look for, but seems to elude them. Validation that the program works --RESULTS. Isn't that the biggest question you get, "What will the program give my son or daughter...what can I expect...how long will it take to see results?" I'm very proud Jake is attending the Camp MakeBelieve Kids program. The changes he's made are priceless!"
