Teasing and Camp MakeBelieve KidsThere are many factors that can lead to childhood obesity. Children who are overweight are no strangers to teasing and harassment from peers and family members. The Center for Disease Control reports obese children and teens are targets of early and systematic social discrimination...leading to low self-esteem that hinders academic and social functioning. Teasing is about who has the power in the relationship at any given time and place. Power can come from body size, hairstyle, eye wear, money, age, gender, clothes, beauty, cliques, school and many other factors. When the underdog in a power struggle, feelings can become overwhelming resulting in low self-esteem or depression, often leading to self-destructive behavior or high risk activities. CMB Kids Character - Tia the TeaserMeet our character, Tia the Teaser, who learns Empathy as she enters 6th grade, ditches her childhood friend and joins a clique of mean girls. Join Tia as she struggles with keeping her values she learned at home vs. giving it all up to be popular. Tia is part of the Step 4 Teaching Tool in the CMB Kids 8-Step Program. Lesson plans focus on the inequalities in relationships and how power can be abused or used in a positive way. Specific strategies that deal with appropriate expression of negative feelings and healthy alternatives to self-destructive behavior is addressed along with intimate discussions that promote acceptance of diversity and prevent exclusion from cliques.
