Reading LiteracyThe national estimate of the percentage of adults lacking basic reading literacy is 14.5% and there is an estimated 16 million high-school drop outs (ed.gov). By aligning Social and Emotional (SEL) programs with Reading Literacy standards, a vast improvement (11% increase) is noted in academic test scores as well as better attitudes towards schooling—thus contributing to the education of the whole child, enabling them to compete in our global community. Schools that teach the 4-R's; reading, writing, respect and resolution, show vast improvements in quality of teach and support, children show decrease in depression and ADHD symptoms, less aggression and dramatic improvement in math and reading scores for the children most behaviorally disruptive. Social and Emotional Learning Programs, aligned with Reading Literacy Standards can be taught as a supplement during core school day classes or as academic achievement during after school programs.
