Prevention - CMB Kids Social and Emotional Learning Program

The world is unpredictable for all of us, and it’s especially unpredictable for teenagers who are part of the internet world, learning things at rapid speed. How a teen will handle a crisis depends on many factors; but the more prepared they are ahead of time, the better chance for survival.

Parents may advise their teen to wait until they can “emotionally handle” it before dating and all the issues that go along with it. Some teens take the advice. Other teens plunge ahead, needing to learn things the hard way Add drugs, alcohol and peer pressure to the dating scene and problems intensify. Break ups happen, rumors happen, friends move on, family members get sick. At Camp MakeBelieve Kids we are aware that the world can be a scary place. And we are committed to preparing children for the stressful situations that come up, either in their own lives or the lives of their friends.

The Center for Disease Control reports that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in 11-18 year olds. Only 25% of parents were aware that their child had suicidal intentions. So if parents don’t know what’s going on with their own child and teachers aren’t sure how to teach or when to teach social and emotional skills what can be done?

How the CMB Kids Program Aids in Prevention

Camp MakeBelieve Kids social and emotional learning program is a prevention program that keeps children from taking their feelings out the wrong way. Camp MakeBelieve Kids prevents kids from acting on their negative impulses.

Kids who participate in CMB Kids have statistically significant improvements in 7 behavioral categories because they learn strategies and practice strategies that prepare them for real life situations.

When SEL programs begin in Elementary School, children are then equipped with tools and resources that will carry them through the awkward and painful phases of adolescence.

The CMB Kids SEL program builds Protective Factors that equip children and their parents with the language, dialogue, strategies and skills to maintain self-confidence, self-control and self-regulation of strong feelings, thoughts and behavior. A comprehensive social and emotional learning program, CMB Kids incorporates 8 Steps or components that are necessary to teach children, as young as 5 years old how to:

Initiate and Maintain Healthy Peer Connections
Identify and express Feelings appropriately
Understand and Respect Boundaries (self and others)
Understand and Express Empathy
Manage Moods appropriately
Recognize and stop Manipulation (bullying, negative peer pressure)
Self-Regulation of thoughts, feelings and behavior
Restore Motivation; bounce back with resilience

Camp MakeBelieve Kids Social and Emotional Learning Program has all the elements for a successful Prevention Model. CMB Kids SEL provides the curriculum, the interactive educational tools, the parent education, the research data to evaluate results and the specialized training.

 Testimony

"The study really shines a light on something many parents look for, but seems to elude them. Validation that the program works --RESULTS. Isn't that the biggest question you get, "What will the program give my son or daughter...what can I expect...how long will it take to see results?" I'm very proud Jake is attending the Camp MakeBelieve Kids program. The changes he's made are priceless!"
