Character Education and Camp MakeBelieve Kids
Character Education is an important part of the Camp MakeBelieve Kids Social and Emotional Learning Program. Camp MakeBelieve Kids has been building character in children for almost 2 decades. Created by child therapist, Pamela Goldberg, this program has been helping hundreds of children within Southern Nevada, and beyond.
We have heard many different terms overlap when it comes to teaching good and moral character development in children; morals education, positive behavioral support (PBS), values education , inclusion programs, safe and drug free schools, caring lessons, religion, sunday school programs, and others. School lesson plans are varied and teaching character development changes along with our social morals at any point in history.
Necessity of Character Building Lesson Plans
Elementary and middle school teachers, often overloaded with teaching the core classes, struggle to fit a character education curriculum within their day. However, educators, aware of the studies that show the positive results children have who participate in social and emotional learning programs with better grades, better attitude and better behavior. Teachers and school district administrators are out there looking for character education programs that would be the right fit for their school. Many home school and charter school programs have been aware of the necessity for character building lesson plans and have found Camp MakeBelieve Kids to be the perfect fit.
At Camp MakeBelieve Kids, we believe that providing character education means building skills that give children the confidence to do what they know is right, basically to be good, follow the rules and behave appropriately, whether anyone is watching--or not.
Sounds simple right? Consider this: good character comes from having good values. Values are the belief system that we live by. Family values can be similar, or they can be quite different. Examples of family values are; children will get a good education, boys will not show emotion, we don’t go outside the family for help, show respect to people in authority. According to Alfred Adler, the guru of child development, all children learn their family’s values by 4 years of age. So, theoretically, a child should have a good set of values when entering kindergarten and follow the school rules, get along with peers, participate and be eager for the next lesson. We wish it were this easy! At Camp MakeBelieve we realize there are many things that influence a child, for the good or bad. An example is when a child comes from a value system that is very different from those of the school and puts negative peer pressure on other children. Holding onto the good character children come to kindergarten with can become a battle if not addressed.
