The Parent Memo - Camp MakeBelieve Kids 8-Step Program

The Parent Memo is an important building block in the CMB Kids program and helps bridge the gap between lessons and home. When parents learn along with their children the social and emotional skills from the CMB Kids program, the improvements with children are greater and longer lasting. And the program benefits trickle down to other relationships whether with family, friends or work---making the world a better place.

Lesson Plans and Parent Memos

The CMB Kids 8-Step Guidebook include 32 separate Parent Memos, found at the end of each lesson plan.  These memos are designed to give parents the opportunity to learn the same social and emotional learning concepts as their children are learning in the class, although in a much more condensed version.  The Parent Memo gives a brief description of the concept, and what the objective was for that particular lesson.  The Parent Memo gives parenting tips, strategies and instructions on how to reinforce the skills learned in Camp MakeBelieve Kids at home and in the community.

Additional support and resources are offered to parents through monthly parenting meetings, text messaging, email or phone calls.  Parents have reported over and over again that the Parent Memos are extremely helpful for home use. It gives parents the opportunity to talk to their children about topics that are sometimes difficult to bring up. For example, during Step 3, as children are learning about personal, emotional and physical boundaries, issues are brought up about inappropriate touching, gestures, words and viewing materials--and what should be off limits.  The Parent Memos, suggestions for how to further the discussion at home about boundary invasion are given, thus helping to protect children against child molesters or other harmful situations.

Parents are also encouraged to inform the counselor before the sessions begin of any important changes that take place, both positive or negative allowing for positive support and honest feedback.

Benefits of the Parent Memos

As parents become involved in CMB Kids, the entire family feels more in control and confident, resulting in positive, safe and healthy relationships, attitudes, grades and--quality of life.

 Testimony

"The study really shines a light on something many parents look for, but seems to elude them. Validation that the program works --RESULTS. Isn't that the biggest question you get, "What will the program give my son or daughter...what can I expect...how long will it take to see results?" I'm very proud Jake is attending the Camp MakeBelieve Kids program. The changes he's made are priceless!"
