The 7 Act Musical Playlet, Mr. Feathers!, Songs and Musical Tracks: Teaching Tools for Step 5; Mood ManagementThe Musical Playlet, Mr. Feathers!, was created and performed by professional actors, musicians and writers to bring the CMB Kids characters; Mad Melly, her sister, Beth and zany parrot, Mr. Feathers, to life. Through voice animation and music, this educational tool provides 70 minutes of entertainment through Social Stories and situations, divided into 7 short segments. Following each segment, the Creator of CMB, Pamela Goldberg, briefly comments on the ACT, introduces a Talking Point and suggests an Imaginative Exercise. This discussion and activity can be done as part of a 7 part lesson plan, or saved for a writing assignment. The songs are delightful, fun and memorable, quickly becoming favorite tunes to sing a-long when energy is needed to change a mood. The original songs are followed by song tracks, allowing for singing performance by students participating in the program. Upon request, the Mr. Feathers! Radio Script, props and stage set up is available, for educators who wish to have their students perform the Musical Playlet for school, camp or home audiences. All the components are available to incorporate this playlet into a drama, musical theater, reading literacy, character education or enrichment program. Live performance can be followed by interactive audience participation. Thoughts and feelings about the playlet may also be encouraged through journal writing, taking a survey, doing a group activity or giving an essay assignment. In the Step 5 section of the CMB Kids Guidebook, there are numerous ideas for topics, activities and strategies. However, teachers are encouraged to relate the performance to current social issues that are effecting the school climate. The Social and Emotional Learning Advantage for Mr. Feathers!• See and hear Melly having negative consequences when unable to control moods • Identify with the characters • Melly; inability to control temper or frustration • Beth; feels helpless that she can’t control her sister’s moods • Personalize to own situations • Generalize anger as a global problem when not expressed appropriately • Understand each person is responsible for own mood • Learn strategies to change mood
